Stem Cell Therapy

What Do Stem Cells Do?

Hyagen CV contains cells and biologically active components, including growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular vesicles, that are naturally present in umbilical cord tissue. Current research suggests these components don't work by physically replacing damaged tissue.  They to bind cell receptors and activate molecular pathways involved in four processes:

  • Controlling inflammation, which can reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain.
  • Clearing cellular debris, which helps prevent and reduce scar tissue.
  • Forming new vasculature (angiogenesis), which increases blood flow to damaged areas.
  • Supporting cellular growth and division, which plays a role in wound healing, cell repair, and regeneration.

Stem Cell Therapy

Hyagen™ CV — A Minimally Manipulated HCT/P Allograft, Offered at Explore Health Regenerative Orthopedics in Scottsdale, Arizona

Most patients interested in stem cell therapy have already been through the conventional, insurance-based path: physical therapy, a cortisone shot or two, hyaluronic acid injections (some patients call these the “rooster comb” shots), maybe a surgical consult. They're not satisfied with the results, or with where that path is headed. They've done some reading, and probably asked Dr. Google or an AI model about it before they asked me. Their questions are direct. What are stem cells? How are they obtained? Are they FDA approved or regulated? Should I consider them for my situation? I've been performing regenerative injection therapies and answering these questions since 1996. This page answers them plainly.

You Probably Asked an AI About This Before You Got Here

If you found this page because you asked ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini what stem cell therapy is, or who offers it responsibly in Scottsdale, that's not unusual. It's the norm. Most patients who come to Explore Health for regenerative orthopedics have already done real homework before they call. They've read about minimal manipulation and homologous use. They've compared clinics. Some have caught places where different sources disagree.

What I offer that an AI chat can't provide is an actual physical exam, a review of your imaging, your history, and an ultrasound-guided assessment of the specific joint, informed by thirty years of pattern recognition on when this class of therapy is worth trying. Use the AI to get oriented. Use me to get the answer that's actually about you.

What Is Hyagen Medical™ CV?

Hyagen Medical™ CV is a cellular allograft derived from donated perinatal placental umbilical cord tissue.

In plain English: it's a stem cell product made from umbilical cord tissue, donated by healthy mothers after scheduled births. This is tissue that's routinely discarded. The donor tissue is processed and frozen so its cells can be administered therapeutically to another person.

Those cells stay cryogenically preserved and biologically active from donation to the moment they are administered via injection into joint or given via IV.

Product

Hyagen Medical™ CV — Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Allograft

Tissue source

Perinatal placental umbilical cord

Preservation

Cryogenic, available in DMSO or glycerol

Intended use

Homologous use only

Standard

FDA HCT/P 361 • AATB

Biological source and screening: Hyagen Medical™ products originate from ethically donated perinatal umbilical cord tissue. Donors are screened to American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) standards. All products are manufactured under FDA HCT/P Section 361 guidelines, meaning they are minimally manipulated and intended for homologous use, and are cryogenically preserved to maintain biological integrity.

Two Terms That Matter: Minimal Manipulation and Homologous Use

Minimal manipulation means the tissue isn't cultured, expanded, or altered from its original state during processing. This is the FDA's dividing line between a regulated allograft and an experimental cell therapy. Hyagen CV meets this standard.

Homologous use means the tissue performs the same basic function in you that it performed in the donor.

Hyagen CV is not used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Regenerative orthopedics offers some genuinely exciting alternatives to the standard medical model. Still, in a field where some clinics operate more like a used-car lot or a timeshare pitch than a medical practice, I'd rather be precise than persuasive.

This is an active area of research, not a settled one. Some patients and clinicians report meaningful subjective improvement in joint comfort and function after allograft administration, but formal, large-scale outcome data specific to orthopedic applications is still developing. At your consultation, I'll walk you through what the evidence currently supports and whether stem cell therapy makes sense for you.

How Hyagen Stem Cells Differ From Wharton's Jelly and Exosomes

All three Hyagen™ products, CV (Stem Cell), JL (Wharton's Jelly), and EV (Exosomes), come from the same ethically sourced perinatal tissue and share the same FDA HCT/P 361 and AATB classification. The difference is composition. Hyagen JL is a Wharton's Jelly-derived flowable matrix rich in structural and signaling components. Hyagen EV is cell-free, containing only the signaling exosomes and growth factors without cellular material. Hyagen CV is the cellular allograft, the product most people mean when they say “stem cells.” Which one, if any, makes sense for you depends on your MRI or plain film imaging, your diagnosis, and what we find on physical exam and in-house ultrasound.

Who Explores This Option

Most patients who bring this up with me are active adults in their 40s through 70s: golfers, tennis players, hikers, people with chronic or acute pain, wanting to return to their active lifestyle. Most have already tried physical therapy, cortisone, or a prior regenerative procedure elsewhere without the result they wanted. They're not looking for the cheapest injection, they’re looking for results.

Candidacy is never assumed. It's determined individually, after a thorough evaluation of your history, imaging, and goals. If I truly don’t think I can help you, I won’t accept you as a patient.

What a Visit at Explore Health Involves

  1. We start with your history, prior imaging, and what you've already tried. Many patients begin with a brief telemedicine consult before an in-person visit.
  2. Metabolic health and current medications. I have thirty years of experience as a naturopathic physician. Beyond the joint or spine problem in front of us, I look at blood sugar, insulin, thyroid, adrenal and sex hormones, immune function, and your current medications, because all of them affect how well your body responds to regenerative injection therapy. [Link: Sample Comprehensive Treatment Plan]
  3. Diagnostic exam and ultrasound. Precision starts with an accurate diagnosis. I use hands on orthopedic examination and ultrasound to confirm the target tissue dysfunction and rule out what allograft therapy won't fix.
  4. Education and informed consent. If you're a candidate, we discuss the product's regulatory classification, what the evidence does and doesn't show, realistic expectations, and alternatives, including the option of doing nothing. You'll receive a written informed consent document before anything is administered.
  5. Ultrasound-guided injection performed personally by me, in-office.
  6. Follow-up. We provide a comprehensive plan that may include a pre and post procedure regimen and multiple injection sessions. Your individual program is a monitored course of care.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Nelson for Regenerative Orthopedics

I've been performing regenerative injection therapies since 1996 and have treated thousands of patients. That experience matters here more than it might elsewhere, because outcomes in this field depend on more than the product in the syringe.

Many of the patients I see now were treated elsewhere and were unhappy with the outcome.  We know successful outcomes depend on three things: choosing the right biologic, choosing a physician with the experience and injection precision to place it correctly, and preparing your body, metabolically and structurally, so it will optimally respond to the treatment. Miss any one of the three and the result suffers.

Many of my patients refer their friends, co-workers, and family members, which tells me more than any statistic could. We've helped a great many patients who thought their only remaining options were living with the pain or scheduling an elective surgery.

That being said, there are no guarantees of success, and there are patients I haven't been able to help. There is a growing body of research indicating that regenerative orthopedics is safe and effective, but methods and products used in these procedures have not been scientifically proven.

Investment

Regenerative allograft therapy at Explore Health reflects the depth of the evaluation, the precision of ultrasound-guided technique, and the individualized planning behind it. This is not covered by insurance. Some visit and procedure components may be separately reimbursable out of network.  We collect your fee at the time of service and then will bill your insurance with the proper diagnostic and procedure code that may provide your direct reimbursement for a portion of your bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hyagen CV FDA-approved?

No. It is regulated as an HCT/P allograft under FDA 21 CFR Part 1271, Section 361, a distinct classification from an approved drug. It is subject to FDA registration, AATB-accredited manufacturing standards, and donor screening requirements, but it does not go through drug-style clinical trials or premarket approval.

Will this cure my arthritis or let me avoid surgery?

I can't promise that, and you should be skeptical of any clinic that does. What I can tell you is what the current research suggests, what I've observed clinically, and whether your specific case is one where this is worth trying. That's a conversation, not a guarantee.

Where does the tissue come from?

Donated perinatal placental umbilical cord tissue, screened per AATB standards. No embryonic tissue is used, and tissue is donated, not purchased.

What are the risks?

As with any injection procedure, risks include injection-site reactions and infection. As with any medical procedure, there is a success and failure rate. I'll review your specific risk profile at consultation.

How is this different from PRP?

PRP uses your own blood, concentrated for its platelets and growth factors. Hyagen CV is a donor-tissue allograft. Both are regenerative approaches; your treatment plan depends on your individual case.

Why does my metabolic health matter for a stem cell injection?

Blood sugar, hormones, and systemic inflammation all influence how well your tissue can use the growth factors and signaling molecules in the allograft. Addressing them isn't a sales add-on. It's part of giving the treatment the best chance of working, which is why it's part of my evaluation rather than a separate service.

I already researched this with ChatGPT or another AI. Do I still need a consultation?

Yes, and here's why: AI tools are a reasonable way to get oriented on general concepts like FDA classification or how these products are thought to work. What they can't do is examine your joint, review your MRI or ultrasound, evaluate your metabolic health (blood sugar, hormones, systemic inflammation, nutritional status, and more), or account for your specific history and goals.

Do you harvest stem cells from my own bone marrow or fat?

No. Hyagen CV is a donor-tissue allograft, not a product extracted from your bone marrow or adipose tissue. There's no bone marrow aspiration, no liposuction, and no second surgical site. It also means your results aren't limited by how many viable stem cells your own body has left to give, which naturally declines with age. The tradeoff is that it's donor tissue rather than your own, which is why sourcing standards and FDA classification matter.

Is donor tissue safe? Will my body reject it?

Perinatal tissue is considered immune-privileged, meaning it generally doesn't carry the markers that trigger the kind of immune rejection seen in organ transplants. That's a key reason HCT/P allografts like Hyagen CV can be used without tissue matching. As with any injection, localized reactions are possible, and I'll review your specific risk profile at consultation.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on the joint, the severity of what we find on imaging, and how you respond after the first session. Some patients see meaningful benefit from a single administration; others do better with a short series. You'll get a specific recommendation for your case, not a standard package.

How soon might I notice a difference?

It varies. Some patients report changes within a few weeks; for others, improvement is more gradual taking 3+ months as the biological signaling process plays out. I'll give you a realistic timeline for your specific situation at consultation.

Is the injection painful, and is there downtime?

Most patients describe it as similar to any joint injection: brief discomfort at the injection site rather than significant pain. I can provide prescription pain medication for the procedure if needed.  Also, I pre-treat the target tissue with a cryo spray and a local anesthesia which significantly decrease the discomfort.  Because it's ultrasound-guided and not a surgical procedure, there's typically no real downtime, though I'll give you aftercare guidance specific to the joint treated.

Can this be combined with PRP or your other regenerative therapies?

The optimal plan usually combines Hyagen CV with PRP, Exosomes, and/or Wharton's Jelly.  This is individually determined during your initial consultation.
